शब्दकोशमध्ये लायब्ररीची प्रथम परिभाषा अशी खोली आहे जिथे पुस्तके आणि इतर साहित्यिक साहित्य ठेवले आहे. ग्रंथालयाची इतर परिभाषा म्हणजे साहित्यिक साहित्य, चित्रपट, सीडी, मुलांचे खेळ इत्यादींचे संग्रह इ. ग्रंथालय असे संकलन असणारे इमारत किंवा संस्था देखील आहे.
