Metropolitan adalah sebuah bandar besar atau kawasan bandar yang merupakan pusat ekonomi, politik, dan budaya yang penting untuk sebuah negara atau rantau, dan hub penting untuk hubungan, perdagangan, dan komunikasi serantau atau antarabangsa. Istilah ini adalah bahasa Yunani dan bermaksud "ibu kota" sebuah tanah jajahan, iaitu kota yang menghantar pemukim.
