Burung Emu

Burung Emu ialah burung asli Australia yang terbesar, serta burung tak terbang yang kedua terbesar di dunia, iaitu selepas saudara ratitnya, burung unta. Burung ini juga merupakan ahli tunggal dalam genus Dromaius yang masih wujud. Subspesies Emu yang hidup di Tasmania terpupus selepas penempatan orang Eropah di Australia pada tahun 1788; taburan subspesies di tanah besar Australia kini juga terjejas oleh kegiatan-kegiatan manusia. Pada suatu ketika, banyak burung Emu terdapat di pantai timur Australia tetapi kini, burung ini jarang didapati di sana; sebaliknya perkembangan pertanian dan pembekalan air untuk ternakan di kawasan pedalaman benua ini telah menambahkan tempat kediaman burung Emu di kawasan-kawasan yang kering. Burung Emu masih banyak terdapat di tanah besar Australia, walaupun burung ini mengelakkan kawasan-kawasan yang penuh sesak atau terlalu kering, serta hutan-hutan padat. Burung Emu mempunyai bulu lembut yang berwarna coklat dan boleh mencapai ketinggian sebanyak dua meter dan berat sebanyak 45 kilogram.
