Ulex
Ulex jest rodzajem roślin kwitnących w rodzinie Fabaceae. Rodzaj zawiera około 20 gatunków kolczastych krzewów zimozielonych w podrodzce Faboideae z rodziny grochu Fabaceae. Gatunki te pochodzą z części zachodniej Europy i północno-zachodniej Afryki, z większością gatunków w Iberii. Gorse jest ściśle związany z miotłami, podobnie jak ma zielone łodygi i bardzo małe liście i jest przystosowany do suchych warunków uprawy. Różni się jednak jego skrajnym odrętwieniem, pędami są zmodyfikowane na rozgałęzionych cierniach o długości 1-4 cm, które niemal całkowicie zastępują liście jako rośliny działające organów fotosyntetycznych. Liście młodych roślin są trifoliate, ale w dojrzałych roślinach są zredukowane do wagi lub małych kolców. Wszystkie gatunki mają żółte kwiaty, ogólnie showy, niektóre z bardzo długi okres kwitnienia.
