Linear B jest skryptem sylabicznym, który był używany do pisania Mycenaean Greek, najwcześniejszej zaświadczonej formy greckiej. Skrypt poprzedza grecki alfabet przez kilka wieków. Jest on pochodzący ze starej liniowej A, nieokreślonego wcześniejszego skryptu, służącego do pisania języka minojskiego, podobnie jak późniejszy sylabar cypryjski, który również rejestruje język grecki. Linear B, znajdujący się głównie w archiwach pałacowych w Knossos, Cydonia, Pylos, Teby i Mykenze, zniknął wraz z upadkiem cywilizacji mykeńskiej w czasach Zejścia Brązu. Następny okres, znany jako greckie ciemności, nie dostarcza żadnych dowodów na użycie piśmie. Jest to również jedyny z trzech "Linear", który ma być odszyfrowany, przez młodego angielskiego architekta i samouka języka, Michael Ventris. Linear B składa się z około 87 znaków sylabicznych i ponad 100 znaków ideograficznych. Te ideogramy lub "oznaczające" znaki symbolizują przedmioty lub towary. Nie mają wartości fonetycznej i nigdy nie są używane jako znaki słowne podczas pisania zdania. Zastosowanie metody Linear B wydaje się być ograniczone do kontekstu administracyjnego.
