Nektar jest cieczą bogatą w cukier wytwarzaną przez rośliny w gruczołach zwanych nektarami, albo w kwiatach, z którymi przyciąga zapylające zwierzęta, albo przez nerki pozakomorowe, które dostarczają zwierzętom mutualistycznym źródło składników odżywczych, co z kolei zapewnia ochronę antybakteryjną.
