Z marynarki na 100 pentekontów i armii 1000 łuczników splądrował wyspy Morza Egejskiego i miasta na wybrzeżu Jońskim Azji Mniejszej, pokonując i zniewalając marynarki Lesbos i Miletu. Podbił też małą wyspę Rhenea, którą przywiązał do pobliskiego Delosa za poświęcenie Apollo. Miał reputację zarówno jako zacięty wojownik, jak i oświecony tyran. Na Samosie zbudował akwedukt, dużą świątynię Hera, a pałac później przebudowany przez cesarza rzymskiego Caligula. W 522 pne świętował niezwykły podwójny festiwal na cześć Boga Apollo z Delos i Delphi; sugerowano, że Homilia Hymn Apollo, czasami przypisywana Cynaethus z Chios, została skomponowana z tej okazji. Polcrates był prawdopodobnie patronem poeci Anacreon, Ibycus i Crotonian Democedes.
