Progestagen
Progestagenami są grupy hormonów steroidowych. Najważniejszym progestagenem w organizmie jest progesteron. Inne endogenne progestageny obejmują 17-hydroksyprogesteron, 5α-dihydroprogesteron i 11-dezoksykortykosteron. Progestogeny są jedną z pięciu głównych klas hormonów steroidowych, oprócz estrogenów, androgenów, mineralokortykoidów i glukokortykoidów. Wszystkie progestageny charakteryzują się podstawowym szkieletem 21-węglowym, zwanym szkieletem pregnana. W podobny sposób estrogeny mają estryczny szkielet i androgeny, oraz szkielet. Progesterzy nazwano ich funkcją w utrzymywaniu ciąży, chociaż są one również obecne na innych etapach cyklu estrogenów i miesiączkowania. Klasa hormonów progestogenów obejmuje wszystkie sterydy z szkieletem pregnana, to znaczy naturalnie występującymi i syntetycznymi. Egzogenne lub syntetyczne hormony są zwykle określane jako progestyny.
