Superstate
Superpaństwo to aglomeracja narodów i / lub państw, często językowo i etnicznie zróżnicowanych, w ramach jednej struktury polityczno-administracyjnej. To różni się od koncepcji supermocarstwa, chociaż są one często postrzegane razem. Jest to również odrębne od koncepcji imperium, gdzie jeden naród dominuje inne narody poprzez siłę militarną, polityczną i ekonomiczną, jak w Imperium Rzymskim, chociaż imperium może być superpaństwem, podobnie jak w starożytnej Persji, Imperium Rosyjskim, Indiach i Indiach Chiny. Przykładem małego superpaństwa byłby Republika Jugosławii przed jej rozpadem pod koniec zimnej wojny. Przykładem starożytnego superpaństwa byłyby Chiny, pod różnymi dynastiami. Eurosceptycy twierdzą, że Unia Europejska jest obecnie przykładem nadciągającego się superpaństwa. Wielonarodowe państwa takie jak Kanada i Federacja Rosyjska nie są uważane za superstany. Były Związek Radziecki, choć konstytucyjnie zdefiniowany jako związek republik, był de facto superpaństwem z uwagi na dużą różnorodność kulturową i językową między jej zamieszkanymi etnicznymi narodami, nigdy nie zidentyfikował się jako sam kraj radziecki pomimo oficjalnej doktryny.
