O Benthos (também Benthon, single: the Benthont) é a totalidade de todos os seres vivos que ocorrem na zona do solo de um corpo de água, o Benthal. A palavra vem do benthos grego ("profundidade do mar", "mato"). A palavra de propriedade correspondente é bentônica. Benthos inclui os organismos fixos (séssil), bem como os animais corpulentos, correntes ou temporariamente flutuantes (vagos). O termo foi introduzido por Ernst Haeckel em 1890, a fim de distinguir os organismos que habitam o solo no mar do plancton e nekton que ocorrem na água livre, o Pelágico. Hoje, as biocenosias (comunidades vivas) de todos os tipos de água, tanto os corpos de águas interiores como diferentes profundidades marinhas, são designados como benthos. Das Benthos (auch Benthon, einzeln: der Benthont) ist die Gesamtheit aller in der Bodenzone eines Gewässers, dem Benthal, vorkommenden Lebewesen. Das Wort kommt vom griechischen benthos („Meerestiefe“, „Dickicht“). Das zugehörige Eigenschaftswort lautet benthisch. Das Benthos schließt sowohl die festsitzenden (sessilen) Organismen als auch die kriechenden, laufenden oder vorübergehend schwimmenden (vagilen) Bodentiere ein. Der Begriff wurde 1890 von Ernst Haeckel eingeführt, um damit die bodenbewohnenden Organismen im Meer von den im freien Wasser, dem Pelagial, vorkommenden (Plankton und Nekton) abzugrenzen. Heute werden die im benthalen Bereich anzutreffenden Biozönosen (Lebensgemeinschaften) aller Gewässertypen, sowohl der Binnengewässer als auch der verschiedenen Meerestiefen, als Benthos bezeichnet.
