Na mecânica aplicada, a flexão caracteriza o comportamento de um elemento estrutural delgado submetido a uma carga externa aplicada perpendicularmente a um eixo longitudinal do elemento. Considera-se que o elemento estrutural é tal que pelo menos uma das suas dimensões é uma pequena fração, tipicamente 1/10 ou menos, das outras duas. Quando o comprimento é consideravelmente maior do que a largura e a espessura, o elemento é chamado de feixe. Por exemplo, uma haste de armário caindo sob o peso da roupa em cabides de roupa é um exemplo de um feixe que sofre de flexão. Por outro lado, um shell é uma estrutura de qualquer forma geométrica onde o comprimento e a largura são da mesma ordem de grandeza, mas a espessura da estrutura é consideravelmente menor. Um tubo curto de grande diâmetro, mas de paredes finas, suportado em suas extremidades e carregado lateralmente é um exemplo de um invólucro que sofre de flexão. Na ausência de um qualificador, o termo flexão é ambíguo porque a dobra pode ocorrer localmente em todos os objetos.
