Galvanômetro
Um galvanômetro é um tipo de amperímetro sensível: um instrumento para detectar corrente elétrica. É um atuador eletromecânico analógico que produz uma deflexão rotativa de algum tipo de ponteiro em resposta à corrente elétrica que flui através de sua bobina em um campo magnético. Os galvanômetros foram os primeiros instrumentos utilizados para detectar e medir correntes elétricas. Galvanômetros sensíveis foram usados para detectar sinais de longos cabos submarinos e para descobrir a atividade elétrica do coração e do cérebro. Alguns galvanômetros usam um ponteiro sólido em uma escala para mostrar medidas, outros tipos muito sensíveis usam um espelho em miniatura e um feixe de luz para fornecer amplificação mecânica de sinais de baixo nível. Inicialmente, um instrumento de laboratório que confia no próprio campo magnético da Terra para fornecer força de restauração para o ponteiro, os galvanômetros foram desenvolvidos em instrumentos portáteis compactos, robustos e sensíveis, essenciais para o desenvolvimento da eletrotécnica. Um tipo de galvanômetro que registra permanentemente as medições é o gravador gráfico. O termo expandiu-se para incluir o uso do mesmo mecanismo em equipamentos de gravação, posicionamento e servomecanismo.
