Nitração
Nitração é uma classe geral de processo químico para a introdução de um grupo nitro em um composto químico orgânico. Mais vagamente, o termo também é aplicado incorretamente ao processo diferente de formar ésteres de nitrato entre álcoois e ácido nítrico, como ocorre na síntese de nitroglicerina. A diferença entre a estrutura resultante de nitro compostos e nitratos é que o átomo de nitrogênio em compostos nitro está diretamente ligado a um átomo não oxigenado, tipicamente carbono ou outro átomo de nitrogênio, enquanto que em ésteres de nitrato, também chamados nitratos orgânicos, o nitrogênio está ligado para um átomo de oxigênio que, por sua vez, geralmente está ligado a um átomo de carbono. Existem muitas aplicações industriais importantes de nitração no sentido estrito; os mais importantes por volume são para a produção de compostos nitroaromáticos, como o nitrobenzeno. As reacções de nitrogação são particularmente utilizadas para a produção de explosivos, por exemplo a conversão de guanidina em nitroguanidina e a conversão de tolueno em trinitrotolueno. No entanto, eles são de grande importância como intermediários químicos e precursores. Milhões de toneladas de nitroaromáticos são produzidas anualmente.
