As Ilhas Paracel, conhecidas como Ilhas Xisha em chinês e como Hoàng Sa Archipelago em vietnamita, é um grupo de ilhas no Mar do Sul da China, controlado pela República Popular da China e reivindicado por Taiwan e Vietnã. As ilhas incluem mais de 30 ilhotas, bancos de areia e recifes em uma área marítima de cerca de 15 mil quilômetros quadrados com menos de 8 quilômetros quadrados de terra. O arquipélago é aproximadamente equidistante das costas do Vietnã e da China: 180 milhas náuticas ao sudeste da Ilha de Hainan e cerca de um terço do caminho entre o Vietnã Central e as Filipinas do norte. The Paracel Islands, known as Xisha Islands in Chinese and as Hoàng Sa Archipelago in Vietnamese, is a group of islands in the South China Sea controlled by the People's Republic of China and claimed by Taiwan and Vietnam. The islands include over 30 islets, sandbanks and reefs over a maritime area of around 15,000 square kilometres with less than 8 square kilometres of land. The archipelago is approximately equidistant from the coastlines of Vietnam and China: 180 nautical miles southeast of Hainan Island, and about one-third of the way between Central Vietnam to the northern Philippines. The Paracel Islands consist of two main island groups: the Amphitrite Group in the northeast and the Crescent Group about 70 km to the southwest. The People's Republic of China took the Amphitrite Group in 1950 from the Republic of China during the Chinese Civil War and the Crescent Group from South Vietnam in the Battle of the Paracel Islands in January 1974. South Vietnam's claim to the islands was inherited by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, which has ruled all of Vietnam since 1976.
