Um cavaleiro de postilion era o condutor de um treinador de puxar a cavalo ou uma poltrona de posto, montado em um dos cavalos de desenho. Em contrapartida, um coelhão seria montado no veículo junto com os passageiros. Os pilotos de Postilion normalmente cavalgaram o cavalo esquerdo de um par porque os cavalos costumavam ser treinados apenas para serem montados da esquerda. Com uma equipe dupla, ou haveria dois postilions, um para cada par, ou um postilion iria montar no cavalo traseiro esquerdo para controlar todos os quatro cavalos.
