Pyroxeno
Os piroxenos são um grupo de importantes minerais de inosilicato formadores de rocha encontrados em muitas rochas ígneas e metamórficas. Eles compartilham uma estrutura comum consistindo em cadeias únicas de tetraedros de sílica e cristalizam nos sistemas monoclinico e ortorrômbico. Os piraxenos têm a fórmula geral XY (Si, Al) 2O6 (onde X representa cálcio, sódio, ferro + 2 e magnésio e, mais raramente, zinco, manganês e lítio e Y representa íons de tamanho menor, como cromo, alumínio, ferro + 3 , magnésio, manganês, escândalo, titânio, vanádio e até ferro + 2). Embora o alumínio substitua extensivamente o silício em silicatos, tais como feldspatos e anfíboles, a substituição ocorre apenas em uma extensão limitada na maioria dos piroxenos. O nome pyroxene vem das palavras gregas para fogo (πυρ) e estranho (ξένος). Os Pyroxenes foram chamados desta forma por sua presença em lavas vulcânicas, onde às vezes são vistos como cristais embutidos em vidro vulcânico; Supunha-se que eram impurezas no vidro, daí o nome "estranhos de fogo". No entanto, eles são apenas minerais formadores precoce que cristalizaram antes da lava irromper.
