Um retábulo é um retábulo emoldurado, levantado levemente acima da parte de trás do altar ou mesa de comunhão, sobre a qual se colocam a cruz, candelabros cerimoniais e outros ornamentos. A utilização externa do termo, como em francês, é diferente, e onde a palavra é mantida com esta aplicação estrangeira, a distinção deve ser observada. O retrotabulo latino medieval foi aplicado a uma característica arquitetônica criada na parte de trás de um altar e geralmente assumindo a forma de uma tela que enquadra uma imagem, trabalho esculpido ou esculpido em madeira ou pedra, ou mosaico, ou de uma característica móvel, como Pala d'Oro na Basílica de São Marcos, Veneza, de ouro, jóias e esmaltes. O retablo estrangeiro é, portanto, o que, em inglês, deveria ser chamado de retoque, embora não seja no uso moderno uma característica móvel. O termo espanhol cognado, retablo, geralmente se refere mais amplamente a qualquer descrição bidimensional de um santo ou outra figura religiosa cristã, em contraste com um bulto, uma estátua tridimensional do mesmo.
