Chiron, o filho de Cronos, era o mais famoso e sábio dos centauros, compreendido nos misteriosos segredos, habilidosos na caça e artesanato na arte da música. Dizia-se que o próprio Apolo teria ensinado Chiron. Por ocasião da batalha de Heracles com os centauros, Chiron foi atingido acidentalmente pelo herói (v. E Centauri). Com uma dor terrível que, com toda a sua arte na bagunça, ele não podia ajudar, Chiron se retirou para uma caverna, onde esperou o fim. Sendo imortal, ele não conseguiu encontrar a paz, mas depois de Prometeu, que era mortal, tinha recebido para trocar com ele, libertando-o desse modo de imortalidade. Chiron, fiul lui Cronus, era cel mai vestit și mai înțelept dintre centauri, priceput în tainele lecuirii, iscusit la vînătoare și meșter în arta muzicii. Locuia într-o peșteră, pe muntele Pelion. Înțelept și bun din fire, Chiron era prietenul neprețuit al oamenilor. El a fost cel care l-a ajutat și apărat pe Peleus, i-a crescut și i-a educat pe Achilles, pe Iason și pe Asclepius. Se spunea că însuși Apollo l-ar fi avut drept dascăl pe Chiron. Cu ocazia luptei lui Heracles cu centaurii, Chiron a fost lovit din greșeală de către erou (v. și Centauri). Pradă unor dureri îngrozitoare pe care, cu toată arta sa în ale lecuirii, nu le-a putut alina, Chiron s-a retras într-o peșteră, unde și-a așteptat sfîrșitul. Fiind nemuritor, nu și-a putut găsi însă liniștea decît după ce Prometheus, care era muritor, a primit să facă schimb cu el, dezlegîndu-l în felul acesta de nemurire.
