O oxigênio se liga com ambas as moléculas contendo +2 de ferro de valência. O principal sítio de síntese é a medula óssea durante a produção de eritrócitos. Diferenças menores em idade, gênero e espécies também são uma anemia para estar abaixo de um certo valor, e a policitemia é conhecida por estar presente em grandes quantidades.
