Ars nova
Ars nova se referă la un stil muzical care a înflorit în Franța și țările low-burgunde în Evul Mediu târziu: mai exact în perioada dintre pregătirea romanului de Fauvel și moartea compozitorului Guillaume de Machaut în 1377. Uneori termenul este folosit în general pentru a se referi la toată muzica polifonică europeană a secolului al XIV-lea, incluzând astfel figuri precum Francesco Landini, care lucra în Italia. Ocazional, termenul "ars nova italiană" este folosit pentru a desemna muzica lui Landini și a compatrioților săi. În latină antică și medievală termenul ars nova nu înseamnă "artă nouă", ci mai degrabă "tehnică nouă" și a fost folosit pentru prima oară în două manuscrise contemporane, intitulat Ars novae musicae de Johannes de Muris și Ars nova notandi atribuit lui Philippe de Vitry. Cu toate acestea, termenul a fost folosit pentru prima oară pentru a descrie o epocă istorică de Johannes Wolf în 1904. Ars nova este, în general, folosit împreună cu un alt termen, ars antiqua, care se referă la muzica de vârsta imediat precedentă, perioada de polifonie Notre Dame.
