Controversa de e-mail a Unității de Cercetare Climatică a început în noiembrie 2009 prin hackingul unui server de la Unitatea de Cercetare Climatică de la Universitatea din East Anglia de către un atacator extern. Cu câteva săptămâni înainte de Summit-ul de la Copenhaga privind schimbările climatice, un individ sau un grup necunoscut a încălcat serverul CRU și a copiat mii de e-mailuri și fișiere de calculator în diverse locații de pe Internet. Povestea a fost prima dată dezactivată de criticii schimbărilor climatice pe blogurile lor, cu publicistul James Delingpole popularizând termenul "Climategate" pentru a descrie controversa. Criticii privind schimbările climatice și alții care neagă importanța schimbărilor climatice provocate de om au susținut că e-mailurile au arătat că încălzirea globală a fost o conspirație științifică, în care ei au afirmat că oamenii de știință au manipulat date despre climă și au încercat să suprime criticii. Acuzațiile au fost respinse de către CRU, care a spus că e-mailurile au fost scoase din context și reflectă doar un schimb cinstit de idei. Mass-media de masă a preluat povestea, deoarece negocierile privind atenuarea schimbărilor climatice au început la Copenhaga pe 7 decembrie.
