Fop a devenit un termen peiorativ pentru un bărbat nebun îngrijorat de aspectul și hainele sale din Anglia din secolul al XVII-lea. Unele dintre numeroșii termeni alternativi sunt: "coxcomb", fribble, "popinjay", "fashion-monger" și "ninny". "Macaroni" a fost un alt termen, din secolul al XVIII-lea, care se ocupa mai mult de moda.
