Tonicitatea este o măsură a gradientului efectiv de presiune osmotică a două soluții separate printr-o membrană semipermeabilă. Acesta este utilizat în mod obișnuit atunci când descrie răspunsul celulelor scufundate într-o soluție externă. Spre deosebire de presiunea osmotică, tonicitatea este influențată numai de substanțele dizolvate care nu pot trece prin membrană, deoarece numai acestea exercită o presiune osmotică eficientă. Solutele capabile să treacă liber membrana nu afectează tonicitatea, deoarece vor fi întotdeauna în concentrații egale pe ambele părți ale membranei. Există trei clasificări ale tonicității pe care o soluție le poate avea față de altele. Cele trei sunt hipertonice, hipotonice și izotonice.
