Idealizare
Idealizarea este procesul prin care modelele științifice asumă fapte despre fenomenul modelat, care sunt strict false, însă fac modele mai ușor de înțeles sau de rezolvat. Adică, este determinat dacă fenomenul aproximează un "caz ideal", atunci modelul este aplicat pentru a face o predicție bazată pe acel caz ideal. Dacă o aproximare este corectă, modelul va avea o precizie predictivă mare; de exemplu, nu este de obicei necesar să se țină seama de rezistența la aer atunci când se determină accelerarea unei mingi de bowling care se încadrează, iar acest lucru ar fi mai complicat. În acest caz, rezistența la aer este idealizată să fie zero. Deși acest lucru nu este strict adevărat, este o aproximare bună deoarece efectul său este neglijabil în comparație cu cel al gravitației. Idealizările pot permite ca predicțiile să fie făcute atunci când nu ar exista altceva. De exemplu, aproximarea rezistenței la aer ca zero a fost singura opțiune înainte ca formularea legii lui Stokes să permită calcularea forțelor de tracțiune.
