Intercroppingul este practica cultivării a două sau mai multe culturi în proximitate. Obiectivul cel mai comun al intercroppingului este de a produce un randament mai mare pe o anumită parte a terenului prin utilizarea de resurse care altfel nu ar fi utilizate de o singură cultură. Planificarea atentă este necesară, luând în considerare solul, clima, culturile și soiurile. Este deosebit de important ca culturile să nu concureze reciproc pentru spațiul fizic, nutrienții, apa sau lumina soarelui. Exemple de strategii de intercropping sunt plantarea unei culturi adânc înrădăcinate cu o cultură de mică adâncime sau plantarea unei culturi înalte cu o recoltă mai scurtă care necesită o umbra parțială. Cultura ingerului inga a fost propusă ca o alternativă la distrugerea ecologică a agriculturii cu tăieturi și arsuri. Atunci când culturile sunt selectate cu atenție, se obțin și alte beneficii agronomice. Intercropping is the practice of growing two or more crops in proximity. The most common goal of intercropping is to produce a greater yield on a given piece of land by making use of resources that would otherwise not be utilized by a single crop. Careful planning is required, taking into account the soil, climate, crops, and varieties. It is particularly important not to have crops competing with each other for physical space, nutrients, water, or sunlight. Examples of intercropping strategies are planting a deep-rooted crop with a shallow-rooted crop, or planting a tall crop with a shorter crop that requires partial shade. Inga alley cropping has been proposed as an alternative to the ecological destruction of slash-and-burn farming. When crops are carefully selected, other agronomic benefits are also achieved. Lodging-prone plants, those that are prone to tip over in wind or heavy rain, may be given structural support by their companion crop. Creepers can also benefit from structural support. Some plants are used to suppress weeds or provide nutrients. Delicate or light-sensitive plants may be given shade or protection, or otherwise wasted space can be utilized.
