Un stejar este un copac sau arbust din genul Quercus din familia fagului Fagaceae, având aproximativ 600 de specii existente. Denumirea comună "stejar" poate apărea, de asemenea, în numele speciilor din genurile conexe, în special Lithocarpus. Genul este originar din emisfera nordică și include specii de foioase și specii veșnice care se extind de la temperaturile rece până la latitudinile tropicale din Asia și din America. America de Nord contine cel mai mare numar de specii de stejar, cu aproximativ 90 in Statele Unite. Mexic are 160 de specii, dintre care 109 sunt endemice.
