Pretorius este un nume comun afrikaans. Familia are atât strămoși olandezi cât și indieni: două femei sclave din India de Est, Catharina van Bengale și Helena van Malabar sunt strămoși. Înregistrată în mai multe forme (printre care Praetor, Praetorius, Pratorius, Pretorius, Pretor și Pretor), Pretorius este un nume de origine germanică, deși originea ultimă este cuvântul roman (latin) "praetor". Acest lucru însemna literalmente lider, dar a fost folosit în Roma Imperială pentru a descrie oficialii care conduc procesiuni, precum și Garda Praetoriană care a asigurat securitatea pentru Senat și Familia Regală.
