Degradarea radioactivă, cunoscută și sub denumirea de dezintegrare nucleară sau radioactivitate, este procesul prin care un nucleu al unui atom instabil își pierde energia prin emisia de radiații ionizante. Un material care emite spontan acest tip de radiații - care include emisia de particule alfa, particule beta și raze gama - este considerată radioactivă. Degradarea radioactivă este un proces stochastic la nivelul atomilor unici, prin faptul că, conform teoriei cuantice, este imposibil să se prevadă când un anumit atom se va deteriora. Cu toate acestea, șansa ca un anumit atom să se degradeze este constantă în timp. Pentru un număr mare de atomi, viteza de dezintegrare pentru colectare este calculată din constantele de decădere măsurate ale nuclidelor. Există multe tipuri diferite de degradare radioactivă. O dezintegrare sau o pierdere de energie rezultă atunci când un atom cu un tip de nucleu, numit radionuclidul părinte, se transformă într-un atom cu un nucleu într-o stare diferită sau la un nucleu diferit care conține un număr diferit de protoni și neutroni.
