Efectul de poziție în serie este tendința unei persoane de a rechema primul și ultimul articol într-o serie mai bună, iar cele de mijloc cele mai rele. Termenul a fost inventat de Hermann Ebbinghaus prin studiile efectuate pe el însuși, se referă la constatarea că precizia retragerii variază în funcție de poziția unui articol în cadrul unei liste de studii. Când li se cere să reamintească o listă de articole în orice ordine, oamenii au tendința să înceapă să-și amintească sfârșitul listei, reamintind cel mai bine aceste articole. Printre elementele de listă anterioare, primele elemente sunt rechemate mai frecvent decât elementele de mijloc. Un motiv sugerat pentru efectul primatului este acela că elementele inițiale prezentate sunt cele mai eficient stocate în memoria pe termen lung din cauza cantității mai mari de procesare a acestora. Efectul primatului este redus atunci când articolele sunt prezentate rapid și sunt îmbunătățite atunci când sunt prezentate lent. Liniile de prezentare mai lungi au fost găsite pentru a reduce efectul primatului. Un motiv teoretic al efectului de recurență este acela că aceste elemente sunt încă prezente în memoria de lucru atunci când este solicitată retragerea. Elementele care beneficiază de nici unul nu sunt rechemate cel mai prost.
