Celulele stem sunt celule biologice nediferențiate care se pot diferenția în celule specializate și se pot diviza pentru a produce mai multe celule stem. Ele se găsesc în organisme multicelulare. La mamifere, există două tipuri largi de celule stem: celule stem embrionare, care sunt izolate de masa internă a celulelor blastociste și celule stem adulte, care se găsesc în diferite țesuturi. La organismele adulte, celulele stem și celulele progenitoare acționează ca un sistem de reparații pentru organism, alimentând țesuturile adulte. Într-un embrion în curs de dezvoltare, celulele stem se pot diferenția în toate celulele specializate - ectodermul, endodermul și mezodermul - dar, de asemenea, mențin circulația normală a organelor regeneratoare, cum ar fi sângele, pielea sau țesuturile intestinale. Există trei surse cunoscute de celule stem adulte cunoscute la om: ▪ măduvă osoasă, care necesită extracție prin recoltare, adică găurirea în os; ▪ țesut adipos, care necesită extracție prin liposucție și ▪ sânge, care necesită extracție prin afereză , în care sângele este extras din donator și este trecut printr-o mașină care extrage celulele stem și returnează donatorilor alte părți ale sângelui.
