Testicul
Testiculul este gonadul masculin la animale. Ca ovarele la care sunt omoloage, testiculele sunt componente atât ale sistemului reproducător cât și ale sistemului endocrin. Funcțiile primare ale testiculelor sunt producția de spermatozoizi și producerea de androgeni, în principal testosteronul. Ambele funcții ale testiculului sunt influențate de hormonii gonadotropici produși de hipofiza anterioară. Luteinizarea hormonului duce la eliberarea de testosteron. Prezența atît a testosteronului, cît și a hormonului de stimulare a foliculului este necesară pentru a susține spermatogeneza. De asemenea, în studiile pe animale sa demonstrat că, dacă testiculele sunt expuse la niveluri prea mari sau prea scăzute de estrogeni, spermatogeneza poate fi perturbată într-o asemenea măsură încât animalele devin infertile.
