Violul este un instrument de corzi arcuit. Este puțin mai mare decât o vioară în dimensiune și are un sunet mai profund. Din secolul al XVIII-lea a fost vocea mijlocie a familiei de vioară, între vioară și violoncel. Muzica scrisă pentru viola diferă de cea a majorității altor instrumente, prin faptul că folosește în primul rând clema alto, care este altfel rar utilizată.
