Ulamul poate fi definit ca parte a plantei constând din focare, frunze, tulpini, umbre, semințe, fructe, tuberculi și flori consumate crude, vopsite, distilate sau fierte înainte de mese. Adesea, pentru a adăuga aromă la mesele consumabile, se ajunge la belacanul sambu, budu, cencaluc, maioneză sau alte fracțiuni. De obicei inclusă cu orez și alte feluri de mâncare.
