Гемоглобин (сокращение: Hb) является белковой молекулой в эритроцитах, которые объединяются с кислородом и двуокисью углерода для транспортировки через систему кровообращения в ткани организма. Ион железа в виде Fe + 2 в гемоглобине дает кровь в крови. При нормальных условиях 100 мл крови содержит 15 г гемоглобина, способного транспортировать 0,03 г кислорода. Существует несколько способов измерения содержания гемоглобина в крови, в основном выполняемого автоматически машинами, специально разработанными для проведения некоторых тестов против крови. Внутри этой машины красные кровяные клетки разделяют для выделения гемоглобина в форме раствора. Этот свободный гемоглобин смешивают с химическими веществами, содержащими сильно связывающий цианид с молекулами гемоглобина, с образованием цианметгемоглобина. Освещая свет через раствор цианметгемоглобина и измеряя количество поглощаемого света (особенно для волны 540 нанометров), можно определить количество гемоглобина. Уровень гемоглобина обычно определяется как количество гемоглобина в граммах (г) для каждого декалитера (100 миллилитров).
