Binbaşı AI araştırmacıları ve ders kitapları, alanı akıllı aracının çevreyi algılayan ve başarı şansını en üst düzeye çıkaran bir sistem olduğu "alanı akıllı aracların çalışması ve tasarımı" olarak tanımlıyor. 1955'te terimi icat eden John McCarthy, onu "akıllı makineler üretmenin bilim ve mühendisliği" olarak tanımlıyor. AI araştırması son derece teknik ve uzmanlaşmış olup derin olarak birbiriyle iletişim kuramayan alt alanlara ayrılmıştır. Bölümün bir kısmı sosyal ve kültürel faktörlerden kaynaklanmaktadır: alt alanlar belirli kurumlar ve bireysel araştırmacıların çalışmaları etrafında büyümüştür.
