Yoğun bakım tıbbında, ekstrakorporeal membran oksijenasyonu kalp ve akciğerleri o kadar ağır hastalanan veya hasar gören hastalara hem kalp hem de solunum desteği oksijeni sağlayan ekstrakorporeal bir tekniktir ve artık işlevlerini yerine getiremezler. ECMO alan hastanın ilk kanülasyonu bir cerrah veya anestezi uzmanı tarafından yapılır ve hastanın bakımı ECMO tedavisinin süresi boyunca 7 gün 24 saat izleme hizmeti veren Perfüzyonist veya ECMO Uzmanının sorumluluğundadır.
