İnterferon
İnterferonlar, virüsler, bakteriler, parazitler veya tümör hücreleri gibi patojenlerin varlığına yanıt olarak konakçı hücreler tarafından üretilen ve salınan proteinlerdir. Patojenler veya tümörleri ortadan kaldıran bağışıklık sisteminin koruyucu savunmalarını tetiklemek için hücreler arasındaki iletişimi sağlarlar. IFN'ler, sitokinler olarak bilinen büyük glikoprotein sınıfına aittir. İnterferonlar, konukçu hücrelerde viral replikasyona "müdahale" edebilme yeteneğine göre isimlendirilir. IFN'lerin başka işlevleri vardır: doğal öldürücü hücreler ve makrofajlar gibi bağışıklık hücrelerini aktive eder; T lenfositlerine antijen sunumunu yukarı regüle ederek enfeksiyon veya tümör hücrelerinin tanınmasını arttırırlar; ve enfekte olmamış konakçı hücrelerin virüsün yeni enfeksiyona direnecek yeteneklerini arttırırlar. Kaslardaki ağrılar ve ateş gibi bazı belirtiler, enfeksiyon sırasında IFN üretimiyle ilgilidir. Memelilerde yaklaşık on farklı IFN tespit edilmiştir; Bunlardan yedisi insanlar için tanımlanmıştır. Tipik olarak üç IFN sınıfı arasında bölünürler: Tip I IFN, Tip II IFN ve Tip III IFN. Tüm IFN sınıflarına ait IFN'ler viral enfeksiyonlarla mücadelede çok önemlidir.
