Progestojenler bir grup steroid hormondur. Vücuttaki en önemli progestojen, progesterondur. Diğer endojen progestojenler, 17-hidroksiprogesteron, 5a-dihidroprosterteron ve 11-deoksikortikosterondur. Progestojenler estrojenlere, androjenlere, mineralokortikoidlere ve glukokortikoidlere ek olarak beş ana steroid hormonu sınıfından biridir. Tüm progestojenler, temel bir 21 karbon iskeletiyle karakterize olup, bunlara bir pregnane iskeleti denir. Benzer şekilde, östrojenler, bir iskelet iskeletine ve androjenlere, bir iskelet iskeletine sahiptir. Progestojenler, östrojen ve menstrüel siklusların diğer safhalarında da bulunmalarına rağmen gebeliğin devam etmesinde görevleri için adlandırılırlar. Progestojen hormon sınıfı, pregnan iskeletine sahip, yani doğal olarak oluşan ve sentetik olan tüm steroidleri içerir. Exogenous veya sentetik hormonlara genellikle progestinler denir.
