Disk biçimlendirme, ilk kullanım için sabit disk sürücüsü, yarıiletken sürücü, disket veya USB flash sürücü gibi bir veri depolama aygıtı hazırlama işlemidir. Bazı durumlarda, biçimlendirme işlemi bir veya daha fazla yeni dosya sistemi oluşturabilir. Temel ortam hazırlığını gerçekleştiren biçimlendirme işleminin ilk kısmı genelde "düşük düzey biçimlendirme" olarak adlandırılır. Bölümleme, işlemin ikinci bölümünde kullanılan ve veri depolama aygıtını bir işletim sistemince görünür kılan bir terimdir. Sürecin üçüncü kısmı, genellikle "üst düzey biçimlendirme" olarak adlandırılır ve bu dosya genellikle yeni bir dosya sistemi oluşturma sürecine işaret eder. Bazı işletim sistemlerinde bu üç işlemin tamamı veya bir kısmı farklı seviyelerde birleştirilebilir veya tekrarlanabilir ve "biçim" terimi, yeni bir disk ortamının dosyaları depolamak için tamamen hazırlandığı bir işlem anlamındadır. Genel bir kural olarak, bir diskin biçimlendirilmesi, disk ortamındaki tüm mevcut verileri değilse de çoğunu bırakır; bunlardan bazıları veya çoğu özel araçlarla geri kazanılabilir.
