İslam, yedinci yüzyılda Arap siyasi ve dini bir figür olan Peygamber Efendimizin son peygamberinin normatif öğretilerini ve örneklerini olduğu gibi, Tanrı'ya dostça olarak kabul edilen Kur'an'da bulunan samimi bir dindir. İslami kelimeler "teslim" veya Allah'a teslimiyet demektir. Bir Müslüman, "itaatkar" anlamına gelen Müslüman olarak bilinir. Müslümanlar Tanrı'nın Bir olduğunu ve yaşamın amacı Tanrı'ya ibadet etmektir. Müslümanlar aynı zamanda, İslam'ın Peygamberimiz İbrahim, Peygamber Hz. Musa, İsa İsa ve diğer peygamberlerin öğretilerinin tek tanrılı inanışlarının eksiksiz ve evrensel bir biçimi olduğuna inanmaktadır. Peygamber -sallallahu aleyhi bil. yeni bir dinin kurucusu değil, daha önceki peygamberlerin monoteist bir inancıdır. İslami gelenek, Yahudilik ve Hıristiyanlığın, metnin değiştirilmesi ya da yanlış yorumlara yol açarak ya da her ikisinin de Allah tarafından bu peygamberlere verdiği vahyi tersine çevirdiğini teyit eder. İslami dini uygulamalar Müslümanları bir topluma bağlayan beş sorumluluk olan İslam Sütunlarını içerir.
