Znajduje się tu rafineria ropy naftowej, stocznie remontowe, zakłady przemysłu spożywczego, włókienniczego i odsalarnia wody morskiej. Główny port morski kraju i ważna baza rybacka. Węzeł komunikacji lotniczej o znaczeniu międzynarodowym. Posiada uniwersytet. W latach 1967–1990 Aden był stolicą Jemenu Południowego.
