Декартова система координат - це система координат, яка однозначно визначає кожну точку у площині парою чисельних координат, які є підписаними відстанями від точки до двох фіксованих перпендикулярних напрямних ліній, виміряних у тому ж одиниці довжини. Кожна еталонна лінія називається осі координат або просто вісь системи, а точкою, де вони відповідають, є її походження, як правило, у упорядкованій парі. Координати також можна визначити як положення перпендикулярних виступів точки на двох осях, виражені як підписані відстані від початку. Можна використовувати той самий принцип, щоб вказати положення будь-якої точки в тривимірному просторі трьома декартовими координатами, його підписаними відстанями до трьох взаємно перпендикулярних площин. Загалом, n декартові координати вказують точку в n-мірному евклідовому просторі для будь-якої розмірності n. Ці координати до знака дорівнюють відстаням від точки до n взаємно перпендикулярних гіперплощин.
