Теорія модернізації - це теорія, яка використовується для пояснення процесу модернізації в суспільстві. Модернізація називає модель прогресивного переходу від "досучасного" або "традиційного" до "сучасного" суспільства. В цій теорії розглядаються внутрішні чинники країни, припускаючи, що з допомогою "традиційні" країни можуть розвиватися так само, як у більш розвинених країнах. Теорія модернізації намагається ідентифікувати соціальні змінні, що сприяють соціальному прогресу та розвитку суспільств, і намагається пояснити процес соціальної еволюції. Теорія модернізації піддається критиці, що виникає серед ідеологій соціалістичної та вільної ринкової теорії, теоретиків світових систем, теоретиків глобалізації та теоретиків залежностей та ін.
