Абстрактне мистецтво використовує візуальну мову форми, кольору та лінії для створення композиції, яка може існувати із ступенем незалежності від візуальних посилань у світі. Західне мистецтво було від ренесансу до середини 19 ст, підкріплене логікою перспективи та спробою відтворити ілюзію видимої реальності. Доступні були мистецтва інших культур, крім європейських, і показали альтернативні способи описання візуального досвіду художнику. До кінця XIX століття багато художників відчували потребу у створенні нового виду мистецтва, який охоплював би фундаментальні зміни, що відбуваються в галузі технологій, науки та філософії. Джерела, з яких окремі художники висували свої теоретичні аргументи, були різними, і відображали соціальні та інтелектуальні заклопотаності у всіх сферах західної культури того часу. Абстрактне мистецтво, нефігуративне мистецтво, нецілеспрямоване мистецтво та безпредставне мистецтво є вільно пов'язаними термінами. Вони схожі, але, мабуть, не мають однакового значення. Абстракція вказує на відхід від дійсності при зображенні образу в мистецтві. Цей відхід від точного подання може бути незначним, частковим або повним.
