Статут є формальним письмовою постановою законодавчої влади, яка керує державою, містом чи країною. Як правило, статути команд або забороняють щось, або оголошують політику. Це слово часто використовується для того, щоб відрізняти право, винесене законодавчими органами, з прецедентного права, вирішеного судами та правилами, виданими державними органами. Статут іноді називають законодавством або "законом чорного листа". Як джерело права, статути вважаються основним органом влади. В ідеалі всі статути повинні відповідати основному закону землі. Це слово використовується суперечить загальному праву. Статути набувають сили з моменту їх проходження, якщо інше не передбачено. Статути мають декілька видів; а саме державні чи приватні. Декларативний або виправний. Тимчасова або безстрокова. Тимчасовий статут є тим, який обмежений за час його введення в дію. Він продовжує діяти до моменту закінчення терміну його обмеження, якщо раніше не скасовано. Вічний статут є одним, для продовження якого не існує обмеженого часу, хоча це не може бути чітко заявлено таким.
