Терміонічна емісія - це тепловідвідний потік носіїв заряду від поверхні або над потенційно-енергетичним бар'єром. Це відбувається тому, що теплова енергія, надана носіїв, подолає металевий потенціал зв'язування, також відомий як функція роботи. Носії заряду можуть бути електронами або іонами, а в старій літературі іноді називають "термонами".
