ব্যাবিলনেনিয়ার কেন্দ্রীয় দক্ষিণ মেসোপটেমিয়ায় অবস্থিত একটি প্রাচীন আক্কিয়ান ভাষী সেমিটিক রাষ্ট্র রাষ্ট্র ও সাংস্কৃতিক অঞ্চল ছিল। এটি একটি স্বাধীন রাষ্ট্র হিসেবে আবির্ভূত হয় c। 1894 খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দে বাবিলের নগর হিসেবে তার রাজধানী ছিল। এটি প্রায়ই উত্তর মেসোপটেমিয়ায় তার সহকর্মী আক্কাদিয়ান রাষ্ট্র Assyria সঙ্গে প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা জড়িত ছিল। হ্যামুরবিয়ী পূর্ব এখাদিয়ান সাম্রাজ্যের বেশ কয়েকটি অঞ্চল থেকে একটি সাম্রাজ্য সৃষ্টি করার পর ব্যাবিলনেনিয়া অঞ্চলে প্রধান শক্তি হয়ে ওঠে। বাবিলীয় রাজ্য লিখিত সেমিটিক আক্কাদীয় ভাষা সরকারি ব্যবহারের জন্য বজায় রেখেছিল, তার ইমোরাইট প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও ক্যাসিটের উত্তরাধিকারীরা আদিবাসী না হলেও এটি ধর্মীয় ব্যবহারের জন্য সুমেরীয় ভাষা বজায় রেখেছিল, কিন্তু বাবিলের প্রতিষ্ঠিত হওয়ার সময় এটি আর একটি কথ্য ভাষা ছিল না, সমগ্র আক্কাদিয়ান দ্বারা সমৃদ্ধ ছিল। পূর্ববর্তী আক্কাদীয় ও সুমেরীয় ঐতিহ্যগুলি বাবিলীয় সংস্কৃতিতে একটি প্রধান ভূমিকা পালন করেছিল এবং অঞ্চলটি বাইরের শাসনের দীর্ঘকালীন সময়েও একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সাংস্কৃতিক কেন্দ্র হবে। ব্যাবিলনের শহরটির সবচেয়ে প্রাচীন উল্লেখ আক্কাদ এর সার্গন রাজত্ব থেকে একটি ট্যাবলেটে পাওয়া যাবে, খ্রিস্টপূর্ব 23 শতকের শেষের দিকে।
