একটি ভূমিকম্প ভূমিকম্প তরঙ্গ সৃষ্টি করে যে পৃথিবীর ভূত্বক মধ্যে শক্তি হঠাত্ রিলিজ ফলাফল। একটি ভূখণ্ডের ভূতাত্ত্বিকতা, ভূতাত্ত্বিকতা বা ভূমিকম্প কার্যকলাপ একটি সময়ের মধ্যে অভিজ্ঞ ভূমিকম্পের ফ্রিকোয়েন্সি, টাইপ এবং আকার বোঝায়। ভূমিকম্পগুলি ভূগর্ভস্থ পাম্পগুলির পর্যবেক্ষণ থেকে পরিমাপ করা হয়। মুহূর্তের মাত্রা হল সবচেয়ে সাধারণ স্কেল যা সমগ্র পৃথিবীর জন্য ভূমিকম্পের প্রায় 5 টির বেশি রিপোর্ট করা হয়। জাতীয় ভৌগোলিক পর্যবেক্ষণ পর্যবেক্ষণের পরিমাণ 5 এর চেয়ে ছোট আকারে ভূমিকম্পের চেয়েও বেশি ভূমিকম্প হয়, যা বেশিরভাগই স্থানীয় মাত্রার স্কেলে পরিমাপ করা হয়, এছাড়াও রিখটার স্কেল হিসাবে উল্লেখ করা হয়। এই দুটি দাঁড়িপাল্লা তাদের পরিসীমা বৈধতা অনুযায়ী সংখ্যাগতভাবে অনুরূপ। তীব্রতা 3 বা নিম্ন ভূমিকম্পগুলি বেশিরভাগই প্রায় অস্পষ্ট বা দুর্বল এবং মাত্রার 7 এবং অধিক সম্ভাব্য তাদের গভীরতা উপর নির্ভর করে, বৃহত্তর এলাকায় ক্ষতি গুরুতর কারণ। ঐতিহাসিক সময়ে সবচেয়ে ভয়াবহ ভূমিকম্প 9-এর উপরে মাত্রার মাত্রার মাত্রা ছিল, যদিও সম্ভাব্য মাত্রার কোন সীমা নেই। সবচেয়ে সাম্প্রতিক বৃহৎ ভূমিকম্প 9.0 বা বড় ছিল 9
