উদারতাবাদ হল একটি রাজনৈতিক দর্শন বা স্বাধীনতা ও সমতার ধারণাগুলির উপর ভিত্তি করে বিশ্ব দর্শন। লিবারেলরা এই নীতিগুলির তাদের বোঝার উপর নির্ভর করে বিভিন্ন ধরণের দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি পোষণ করে, কিন্তু সাধারণত তারা যেমন স্বাধীন ও সুষ্ঠু নির্বাচন, নাগরিক অধিকার, প্রেসের স্বাধীনতা, ধর্মের স্বাধীনতা, মুক্ত বাণিজ্য এবং ব্যক্তিগত সম্পত্তি হিসাবে মতাদর্শ সমর্থন করে। উদারনীতি প্রথম আলোকিত যুগের সময় আলাদা রাজনৈতিক আন্দোলন হয়ে ওঠে, যখন এটি পশ্চিমের দার্শনিক ও অর্থনীতিবিদদের মধ্যে জনপ্রিয় হয়ে ওঠে। ঐতিহ্যগত অধিকার, রাষ্ট্র ধর্ম, পরম রাজতন্ত্র এবং কিংডম এর ডিভাইন রাইটের সময়কালে উদারবাদীতা সেই ধারণাকে প্রত্যাখ্যান করেছিল। 17 শতকের দার্শনিক জন লকে প্রায়ই একটি স্বতন্ত্র দার্শনিক ঐতিহ্য হিসাবে উদারনীতি প্রতিষ্ঠার সাথে যুক্ত হয়। লক যুক্তি দেন যে প্রতিটি মানুষের জীবন, স্বাধীনতা এবং সম্পত্তির প্রাকৃতিক অধিকার এবং সামাজিক চুক্তি অনুযায়ী, সরকার এই অধিকারগুলি লঙ্ঘন করবে না। লিবারেলরা ঐতিহ্যগত রক্ষণশীলতার বিরোধিতা করেছিল এবং প্রতিনিধিত্বমূলক গনতন্ত্র এবং আইনের শাসনের সাথে সরকারে স্বতঃস্ফূর্ততা পরিবর্তনের চেষ্টা করেছিল।
