একটি মাইক্রোবায়োম হচ্ছে "সমুদ্রসৈনিক, সিম্বিয়টিক এবং প্যাথোজেনিক মাইক্রোজেনজিসিজির বাস্ত্ত্তিক সম্প্রদায় যা আক্ষরিকভাবে আমাদের শরীরের স্থানকে ভাগ করে নেয়।" এই শব্দটি মূলত জোশি লডারবার্গের দ্বারা উদ্ভূত ছিল, যিনি স্বাস্থ্য ও রোগে মানব দেহে বসবাসকারী সুবিকজীবনের গুরুত্বের কথা বলেছেন। অনেক বৈজ্ঞানিক নিবন্ধ যথাক্রমে একটি পরিবেশগত কুলুঙ্গি বা মাইক্রোজিনজম নিজেদের মধ্যে বসবাস করে যে microorganisms যৌগিক জিনোম বর্ণনা, "মাইক্রোবোইমি" এবং "মাইক্রোবায়োটোর" পার্থক্য। তবে মূল সংজ্ঞা অনুসারে এই শর্তগুলি মূলত সমার্থক। মানুষের দেহে মানুষের কোষের চেয়ে 10 গুণ বেশি মাইক্রোবাইলের কোষ রয়েছে, যদিও পুরো মাইক্রোবোইমটি প্রায় 200 গ্রাম পরিমাণে থাকে, যার মধ্যে কিছু ওজন অনুপাত 3 পাউন্ডের মত উচ্চ। কেউ কেউ এটি "নতুন আবিষ্কৃত অঙ্গ" বলে বিবেচনা করে, কারণ এর অস্তিত্ব সাধারণত 1990 এর দশকের শেষ পর্যন্ত স্বীকৃত হয় না এবং এটি বোঝা যায় যে সম্ভাব্য মানবাধিকারের উপর অত্যধিক প্রভাব রয়েছে। আধুনিক ডিএনএ সিকোয়েন্সিং কৌশলগুলি গবেষকরা এই মাইক্রোবের সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠতা খুঁজে বের করতে সক্ষম হয়েছে, কারন তাদের অধিকাংশই বর্তমান প্রযুক্তি ব্যবহার করে একটি ল্যাব ব্যবহার করা যায় না।
